A craft is a profession that entails some form of skilled work. This skill can be naturally present in the craftsman or it can be acquired through training. Historically, craft refers to the manufacture of small scale goods.
Traditionally craftsmen were more privileged than peasantry. Trading craft required some skills and this was usually possessed by those with a higher level of education. These craftsmen were centered on urban areas as this promoted their trade. A person who aspired to become a craftsman would usually complete an apprenticeship and then travel in search of a place to set up shop. Once his own shop was established, that person was regarded as a master of his craft. This entire process resulted in the education of the craftsman to a certain degree.
After the industrial revolution, goods began being produced on a large scale. This altered the entire structure of crafts and now they are only created to fulfill the needs in which mass production falls short. Today crafts usually denote decorative and artistic goods. These goods are made by families or men who practice traditional crafts and prepare articles using materials like wood, glass, metal, clay and textiles.
Crafts that are created by artists independently in a studio are known as studio crafts. Glass blowing, wood work, pottery and weaving are some such craft works. Handicrafts refer to crafts that are made by hand. Most crafts have some functionality. Craft is considered to be a mid-point between art and science. |
