Design refers to the thought based on which an item is created. Production is the execution of a design plan Sometimes design is not preplanned and can happen during construction. Pottery is an example of such designing. A person who designs is known as a designer. There are several disciplines of design such as fashion design, graphic design, interior design, architecture, web design, game design, service design, industrial design, engineering design and product design.
Today, design is often intertwined with other fields. The line between art and design is blurred. Applied art is the broad term used in reference to several fields such as graphic, fashion and industrial design. Fields like engineering involve product and industrial designing.
There are several approaches to designing an item. These approaches act like a guide for the designer. One of the approaches is KISS or ‘keep it simple stupid’, which aims at eliminating pointless complications. Another approach known as use-centered design concentrates on the goal of the product rather than the user, while a user-centered approach focuses on the user of the product. Critical design is a method in which artifacts which are already designed are used to appraise the moral values of a culture.
In order to design, it is essential to take various factors into consideration like aesthetics, function and economics. Designing involves research, planning, thought, modeling, adjustment and re-design.
