Graphic design can also be referred to as communication design or visual communication. It involves creating art in order to convey a message. The art created is presented visually to an audience. A graphic designer can use several different methods combined, like visual arts and typography for example. The term is often used in reference to the act of designing.
Graphic design is commonly used in branding products, websites, logos, publications and advertisements. A graphic designer needs to possess multiple skills as this art form uses more than one means of communication. Some of these skills involved include:
- Printmaking: This is the act of creating art by printing it on paper or other surfaces. Prints are usually made from one original surface known as the matrix. Stone, metal and wood are common matrix materials.
- Page layout: This encompasses arranging various elements on a page. Images and text for example.
- Visual arts: Before the graphics are added to the plan, the designer visualizes the project using principles of art and design; this can be done with the help of computers or traditional media.
- User interface design: Here the reaction of the consumer is taken into consideration and the design is adjusted accordingly.
- Interface design: This mainly relates to web design and software design. Here the designer mainly deals with layouts and interactive communication.
- Typography: This is the art of arranging types in order to convey a message and/or emphasize other text. It entails several activities like selecting typeface and point size to name a few.
