Photography is the act of recording light and electromagnetic radiation either electronically or chemically. It can be classified as an art or science. Electronically, light is recorded using an image sensor and chemically by using a photographic film.
A camera consists of a lens, which focuses the light that is emitted or reflected from objects onto the light sensitive surface inside the camera. This light is exposed onto the light sensitive surface for a particular period of time in order to create an image.
Digital cameras create images by an electronic process. At every pixel there is an electrical charge that gets processed electronically and stored in a file of digital images. These images can then be accessed via the memory for viewing or further processing.
Cameras using a photographic film produce a latent image which is invisible. This image is later developed in a photo lab into a positive or a negative, depending on its purpose and the photographer's requirement. A negative film is usually used to produce a positive image on a paper; this is known as a print.
Photography has several uses. It is used for recreation, scientific purposes, business and recording data. Companies specializing in security also rely deeply on photography. Photography has evolved into an art form, which is gaining popularity rapidly. Universities and schools offer specialized courses on photography.
The area is subdivided into different types depending on the subjects recorded. Fashion photography and nature photography are some such classifications. Digital photography is making this art more accessible and cost effective. |
