Computer Consultants Types and Functioning

Date Added: 2012-01-03 22:47:25

Computer consultants are those whose job is to give businesses advice on how to get the maximum benefit out of information technology. The field is also known as IT consulting, technology consulting or computing advisory. IT consultancy firms give advice and also outsource on behalf of their clients in terms of managing, administering, estimating and deploying systems.

This industry can provide services in four ways. The first are professional services, which handle large workforces and are usually more expensive. Independent consultants are those who work on their own and can be staffed in large firms or run a consultancy. Staffing firms provide technical experts to larger companies as and when required - they usually work on a short-term contract basis. Finally, information security consultants look after the privacy of a business's information.

The skills required by an IT consultant are: technical skills, communication skills, advisory skills, management skills and business skills. The line between management consulting and IT consulting is often blurred. However, management consultants are usually educated in fields like economics, finance and accounting, while IT consultants have degrees in computer science, technology or electronics. Web consulting is another type of IT consulting that focuses on development and web design.

Usually, computer consultants charge a fee on a per day basis. Well-defined projects may also have the option of a fixed-fee consulting contract, which is specific to that project only. These projects generally have a time-frame and a fixed amount of pre-defined work. With the increasing necessity and popularity of IT consultants, more companies are opting for fixed fee contracts.
