The internet is considered to be a cooperative network of millions of individuals and organizations all over the world. Originally, the internet was a protective measure adopted by the US DoD (Department of Defense). Known as Arpanet, this network later expanded as a communications channel within the DoD. The network soon implemented a set of protocols to make communication and data sharing more effective.
The popularity of this effective network increased as more researchers started linking to it. In the 1980s, NSFNet, a network created by the National Science Foundation interlinked high speed computers and gave rise to what later became known as the internet.
