Using electrical components to control mechanical parts is known as robotics. This field of computer science is mostly used to perform repetitive and humanly difficult tasks with high precision. The design of the robot is mainly dependent on its purpose and is widely used for two main reasons. Industrial functions and the toy industry are the largest producers of robotics.
Robots can be characterized under two main categories i.e. domestic and industrial. Domestic robots are mostly developed by top electronic companies that mass distribute toy robots. Some of the most famous examples of such robots include Furby, AIBO and ASIMO. These small sized robots mostly serve as entertainment and are designed as pets or humanoids.
Robotics is used in industries to perform repetitive jobs in factories. Tasks that are too dangerous for humans to perform are also taken over by machines. These tasks include welding of car components or steel pipes, disposing explosives like bombs, eliminating or disposing of toxic waste etc.
Another major use for robotics in the future is in the military. With several military forces looking to replace humans with robots, these developments could reduce the number of casualties of war. Several military forces are already using robots to complete recon missions and dismantling explosives. They are also hoping to mechanize ground army vehicles in the next few years.
Robotics will also be used to care for the elderly. Billions of dollars are being invested every year to research and build autonomous robots that can break up food and feed it to the elderly and physically challenged masses. |
