It looks like the dust is starting to settle from our most recent pagerank update.
As you can see we made out quite well earning many high ranked pages. Other directories didn't fare as well.
I have a theory about why some of these directories took such a hard hit.
As you know a directory is essentially a website that USUALLY does not have much content and has many outgoing links. (Notice we have many blogs and other info. to keep us unique)
Of course most directories owners will promote their directory and try to gain as many high pagerank backlinks as they can. Now that's great and that is what they should be doing but I feel that many directory owners are shooting themselves in the foot!
I am sure you all have seen "deeplink directories" or a directory that offers you an option to add your home page and anywhere from 3-5 other links from your website.
Now this looks like a great opportunity to the submitter but is it really?
What's happening is that for every one website that a webmaster submits he is really getting 4-6 backlinks.
So, that's 4-6 outgoing links or holes for the pagerank to leak out of the directory.
You many think that is a good thing for you but it's not really.
I am willing to bet if you took 10 directories that do not offer deep links and 10 that do the PR on the non deeplink directory details page is much higher than the one that accepts deep links.
Take an example from this directory. All the links below were submitted to a PR4 category and have PR5 detail pages.
http://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-743.html http://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-767.htmlhttp://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-755.htmlhttp://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-761.htmlhttp://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-760.htmlhttp://www.danielmillions.com/detail/link-763.htmlThe above was just a small sample from the directory category but you should get the picture. We only allow one outgoing link and this greatly helps to retain the directories pagerank integrity.
Instead on having a backlink on a deeplink directory that has 4-6 outgoing links and a pagerank of 1-3 on the details page you have a single strong PR5 backlink.
The directory is not leaking out nearly as much pagerank as a deeplink directory does.
A directory that does not offer deeplinks is able build many times more backlinks than it has outgoing. Thus keeping the PR juice in the directory providing a high quality backlink.
You will find some deeplink directories that have a great pagerank, there are some. But how sustainable in the long term is this?
When you have literally thousands of outgoing links from deeplinks it's like shooting holes in a boat.
You can stay a float by bailing out the water or getting more incoming links but eventually you are going to sink.
It's a loosing battle if you were to ask me.
There are just to many out going links and you can't build the incoming links fast enough.
...but hey that's just my theory.
