Loosing Search Engine Rankings

QUICK TIP:

I have seen a lot of comments lately about webmasters loosing their search engine rankings in Google.

Part of this lose can be attributed to changes in the ALGO.

The other part is that you are flat out being overtaken by better optimized websites.

Just because you reach the first page of Google does not mean you can kick back and relax. As soon as you do your will see a steady decrease in your search engine rankings.

SEO is a never ending cat and mouse game.

What ever your SE ranking may be you MUST keep building backlinks and optimizing your website to maintain that spot if not to improve it.

I worked hard as hell to reach the second page of Google for the keyword "Web Directory".

Now I am working twice as hard to improve on that position.

If you want to become as successful webmaster you must dedicate yourself, create a plan of attack and most importantly put it into action.

One last tip, I would recommend you focus on 1 website at a time.

Build that website to it's maximum potential. Then all you have to do is a daily maintenance routine to keep the websites SE position. Maybe spend an hour per day building backlinks and so on.

Now you have the rest of the day to work on a new website and cycle restarts.

How Many Links to Get Pagerank X

Everyone wants to know how many backlinks or a certain Pagerank it takes to get a Pagerank of X.

Example Question: "How many Pagerank 4, 5, and 6 links do I need to get a PR6"

Answer: "How the hell do I know, do I look like Google?"

The truth is that NOBODY and I mean NOBODY knows exactly how many Pagerank X links it takes to get a Pagerank of X.

I don't care who the person is or what they claim to have done or know, it is 100% impossible for them to know what it takes to achieve Pagerank X.

The only real way to achieve a Pagerank of X is to build the crap out of your backlinks to the point where you think you are good, then build 10X more quality links!

I have seen a website that currently has a PR6 with 1 PR9, 7 PR8, 52 PR6 and literaly thousands of PR5 links and so on.

Google has taken the Pagerank mystery and made it even harder to figure out this past update by changing the Algo.

I am not sure exactly what was changed but I can tell you for a fact that it has changed. I have watched more than a few websites drop PR big time even though they continued building more powerful backlinks.

One thing in the Algo that I am pretty sure has changed is that Google will rank your site differently because of the niche of your website.

If you have two different websites in two different niches with the same exact amount of quality PR links one can have a higher Pagerank than the other.

I think the best advice I can give you for increasing your Pagerank at this time is to focus on quality backlinks.

I am willing to bet that 1 high PR quality related backlink will increase your Pagerank more than 50 of the same PR links to non related crappy websites.

This is what I am building my portfolio on for the next update and I will see where it gets me.

Article Marketing Combo

How effective is article marketing for search engine placement and Pagerank?

When combined with other methods it's explosive!

I use articlemarketer.com which many people hate but that's beside the point.

I have submitted about 25-30 articles using this directory in the resource box.

I have also submitted to about 20 of the top paid directories.

A combination of article marketing and directory submission has gained me a ranking for the highly competitive keyword phrase "web directory" on Google.

Dm Web Directory has been on the second page for about 4 months now. Occasionally it will bounce off of page two but it always comes back.

My PR has risen to Pagerank 5 with Pagerank 6 pages and DM Web Directory is now considered one of those "Top 20 Paid Directories" and will only rise with more work.

Another example of article marketing and directory marketing combo can be viewed for my website bulldogsale.net.

I have submitted about 10 - 15 articles and two directory submissions. The results are top rankings for many of my targeted keywords and a Pagerank of four.

The point of this little story is that a combination of backlink strategies works best.

Don't just focus on only marketing with articles or only submitting to directories.

The more diversity you have in your backlinks the better your portfolio looks to the search engines.

It is important to get those links from authority sites but if you can't afford them start off small.

Directory Strength Test

When looking for a quality web directory to submit to there are several key factors to look for.

1. What is the Pagerank of the page that my link will be placed on.

2. How many outgoing links are on the page that my link will be placed on.

3. What is the Pagestrength of the web directory.

4. How well is the web directory promoted.

5. Is the donation price permanent or yearly.

6. Does the web directory have AdSense or other advertisements.

7. If there are sponsor links are they site wide.

8. How well is the directory indexed.

If you find a directory that offers a permanent link on a page with a Pagerank of 3 or higher for 20.00 - 30.00 dollars I would consider this a good deal.

That may seem a little step to some but in reality your link is permanent and this is very cheap when you consider the alternatives.

You want to make sure that the outgoing links on a page are reasonable. I would say anything under 31 links is good.

Pagestrength is another tool to use that shows how well linked and the over all strength of the directory. Any directory that has a Pagestrength of 5 or higher should be considered strong.

Many directories do not have much traffic.

Look at the web directory and see if there is anything that would make you want to come back and visit it.

If so then this probably means others will be coming back also. Which is a good sign that the directory owner is putting effort into creating unique quality content other than just directory listings.

Another good sign and the obvious one that a directory is well promoted is if you see banner and or links on other websites pointing to that directory.

Many directories are now setting their review or donation fee to yearly.

In some cases this is good so the weak listings are weeded out eventually. In other cases it just just means it is going to cost you more in the long run.

If you see AdSense or site wide links being sold on the directory this is a BAD sign.

AdSense is a bad sign because this means when people visit the directory they could click on and leave the website through AdSense instead of your website.

Site wide links being sold is a sign of a weak directory. They are bleeding Pagerank out badly by selling site wide links.

This means less Pagerank is being passed to your directory submission.

You can use the site:www.webistehere.com command in Google to determine how well a directory is indexed.

You want to see how many supplemental pages there are verse normal indexed pages.

Generally speaking we like to see at least 80% of the directory indexed without supplemental pages.

For instance this directory only has about 1% - %2 of it's pages in supplemental results at any given time.

The less pages that are supplemental is a sign of the strength of the directory or any website in general.

These are just a few factors that will help you determine if a particular web directory is worthy of submitting to.

DM Web Directory Update

It's about time for a update on our directory progress.

We have obtained a strong PR5 home page with PR4 categories and four PR6 pages.

More than a few detail pages that have unique descriptions have obtained a Pagerank of 5.

Try to find other directories that can offer that, not many at all.

Our Pagestrength is now a 5 also.

Yahoo backlinks bounce between 16,500 and 22,000

Google backlinks via Google tools 16,927

We were really shooting for PR6 this past update and feel that since this is only our first pagerank update as a directory only better things will come.

We are going to be kicking off an advertising campaign in the next month or so and adding more blogs.
